A New Life
A New Life

Yesterday, I was almost killed. It was a frightening day. I owe my mistress life-long gratitude for saving me from a deadly disaster.

You see, she spends most of her day sitting under my shady garden while working on her computer. I heard her telling her friends that being surrounded by the greenery inspires her to turn out better work.

I am a grown one and I shelter winged and wingless creatures night and day.

She takes good care of plants and trees thriving on her yard. She touches my bark as though it is something rare. I thrill at her tender touch.

Human beings could be heartless when it comes to cutting us down, no matter how peace-giving we are to the society. The color green we wear is soothing on the eyes and our shade is cool. We provide shelter for the tired folks in scorching summer and pouring rain.

Yet,

a certain conversation I heard between two men, robbed me of my confidence.

“This tree seems like an unnecessary appendage to the road. Let’s get the approval from the authorities to get rid of it so the path is clear and bright,” said the road supervisor to his assistant.

On the next day, a team of municipal workers was put on job to bring me down.

When they arrived armed with the mechanism to chop me off, the land lady came out running.

“What are you doing?” she demanded, clearly alarmed.

“Ma’am, we want to cut this tree down as it seems to spread beyond your compound.”

“You can’t do that all of a sudden without prior notice,” she argued, adding,
“besides, it is not coming in the way of traffic on the road. Its branches are far above the ground.”

“Even so...”

“Even so nothing,” she said, a bit belligerently, which perhaps was necessary to oppose their action.

“Please stop this till I get orders from your office preventing this uncalled for chopping of a precious tree,” she concluded.

It is heartening to see her standing firm on her viewpoint.

Two days later,

I heard the couple discussing the issue.

“Sweetheart, don’t worry anymore about your dear tree. I went to the consumer forum to appeal and after hearing the case the judge passed orders directing the Municipality to stop cutting down the tree forthwith,” said her husband with a triumphant flash of smile.

I sighed in relief.

On that evening, as she strolled in the garden, she had a tender look on her face. Touching me with glowing eyes, she said,

“Don’t be afraid dear. No one will harm you anymore.”

Our bond strengthened further more.

All my fellow trees and plants danced in the gently blowing wind, expressing joy and gratitude to her.
