My favorite song? Goodness, what a question. I can't pin myself down, box myself in like that. It's like asking what I'd want as a tattoo. My feelings change every day, every moment, Music shifts, matching fleeting emotions. At first request, one song rose clear above the rest: Every Night, by Imagine Dragons. Yes… Don't tease. You'll find out why if you're nice. Classic ID, with lyrics of apologetic fidelity, In hauntingly picturesque terms, simple yet profound: Colorless sunrise and wind in your hair – Do you want me to stay? Say the word, and I'll be gone, But all else being equal, I'm here every night. Production carries a slightly country flair, At least that was my first impression Back in 2018 when I listened to it first. Where was I? In Middle Tennessee on a hot summer day, Exploring music with dollar store earbuds Trying not to break impossibly fragile wires! An instant treasure, a hallmark of Night Visions, Right alongside Round and Round, Amsterdam, Tiptoe… It gets better each time I listen, Especially since I've upgraded my sound system! Years later, I had to introduce a friend to ID, Someone with particular, refined tastes. I gave her Eyes Closed, partly by accident… She said, “Meh, those are electronic drums. I adore key changes.” Key changes? I knew nothing of music theory, Wracking my brain to pull up a song which would delight her With melodic variety and real instruments. Lo and behold, the bridge of Every Night came to mind, And I sensed such endearing melody is what she was referring to. Sending it along, she responded enthusiastically.
