Iowa
Non-American and non-art student here. I thought that this particular painting with the stern-faced farm folk and the pitchfork looked familiar. It has been parodied and copied untold times. It is easily recognized. Now I have learned that the original artist was born in Iowa and he has a name as most folk seem to have. I cannot say for certain that he looks like a Grant Wood, but that is his moniker.
If the experts claim that this painting represents the American Gothic style who am I to disagree? It does seem to resonate with small town America. Farmers have contributed to the United States since forever. What's that saying? If you've eaten today, thank a farmer. It is a fitting homage to farm life and all it represents.
I enjoyed clowning with Lyn's a Witchy Woman Author Icon , StephBee Author Icon, Princess Megan Rose Author Icon, WakeUpAndLive Author Icon, Sung'manitu Author Icon,Krista Author Icon , AmyJo-July 2/3s done Author Iconand Jellyfish Author Icon. Who doesn't like to mug for a camera at least once in a while? Struggling into the vintage clothing sent us into gales of laughter. We all wrestled to be the one holding the pitchfork. We tried, but not one of us could replicate that stern facial expression in our souvenir photos.
Scenes and characters from Hee Haw and Green Acres rattled around in my brain. I kept listening for the banjo, any banjo. I do not recall seeing a chicken scratching in the dirt either.
