Prompts day 20: Story to feature a character who does not win.

He labored three months, crafting a heartfelt series of stories: preparing timelines, refining details, developing characters, tracing their lives, getting to know them like his own children. He finished within days of the deadline and submitted to the contest.

Two months later, the results were in: he didn't place. Others, who didn't seem to deserve it the way he did, carried off the awards. He tried not to complain, but it hurt.

His young daughter gave him a handmade blue ribbon.

“Daddy, I love your stories. You're the best.”

He hugged her, knowing she mattered more than anyone else's opinion.
