Preacher (opinion piece, 1R song)
Story Opinion piece about your favourite song, album, musical artist or musical instrument.
“When I was a kid, I used to buy and sell gravity…”
Thus begins an underrated and personal deep cut from OneRepublic's 2013 album Native. Preacher is about Ryan Tedder's grandfather, a Pentecostal church leader. The cryptic first verse hints at his tragic passing, and the rest describes his lasting impact on Ryan.
With mellow, sweeping production, it features African-American gospel singers providing backing vocals for a suitably reverent tone.
It has been a hallmark of my musical journey, showcasing some of my favorite elements of OneRepublic's style and songwriting. Ironically, the “spiritual” quote Ryan attributes to his grandfather is not derived from the Bible. But it's a memorable, well-intentioned song regardless.
“He was a million miles from a million dollars, but you could never spend his wealth…”
