Chapter One: The Sign
We cut across the field and stop at a dead end. Looking around, all I see are trees to one side, marking the edge of the woods, and a sign at the edge of the dead end. This sign means nothing to me. Strangely, though, I couldn't stop staring at it. What the fudge is so interesting about this sign? I couldn’t figure it out. This place looks to be the edge of the Forbidden Woods.

“Let’s go. This is the sign I was talking about. Let’s take it back to the headquarters. Well, our hideout. It must be worth $1 million.” My partner in crime, Daisy, opens her door.

I open mine. “A sign that says Yes, Hello, No, the alphabet, numbers, and goodbye. Something special?”

“Of course, Efrikia. It is said to have existed since World War I. The war that is rumored to have involved goblins and ghosts. That was 1,000 years ago. The West claimed a great dragon helped them win. And witches, too. Now help me take this sign out of the ground.”

“You've got to be kidding me. This sign is no different than the others. Of course, we had to face a troll driving all the way out here. That troll was satisfied by that toy Mace. Can you believe the look on its face? But seriously, this sign could be like any other sign. We’ve gone through a dozen signs before. And magic is forbidden to use except for the select few. I wish magic were for everyone.”

“You are a descendant of the rumored great dragon. I hear he still lives today. Now help me.”

“My father is Elksinime. He is great. I wish I had a decent job for once instead of taking orders to steal signs in the middle of the night. A diamond necklace or a jewel would be better.” I twirl my long, black hair with my right hand, and then put it on top of the sign. Immediately, I feel a prick. Then a drop of red slowly weaves its way down the middle of the sign. “Ouch! Oh, my chest, I’m bleeding!”

“Stop! If the magic of the great dragon rests in your veins, then you will open up a portal!” She shoves me out of the way. “Oh my fudge, too late. I knew your father was the great dragon. You would be an heir to the throne in the other world!”

I look. Sure enough, a portal opens up. But is it connected to the land the great dragon came from? I doubt it. It had been 1,000 years since any portals to the other world opened. The sign that led to it disappeared back then. The great dragon couldn’t return home. Only my partner listens to such stories. Why would the great dragon be interested in joining a criminal ring when he was all-wise and powerful enough to thwart any crimes? “I’m not going in there. We may get caught.”

“Too late. There is only one way to find out if this is the lost sign. We have to enter the portal!”

“Enter? And get caught? No, thank you. What the fudge are you thinking? I may have horns, wings, and a tail, but I can’t fight off danger.”

“It will only be for a minute. Let’s go!”

Before I could react, she pushes me through the portal. The air becomes musty, and I can hear buzzing. Flies. I land flat on my face. Something is wrong. I could hear silence and murmurs all around me. I wish I had listened to her and not prick my finger on the sign. Now we are in trouble. Big time. I know it. She lands on top of me, forcing my face down before I could see my surroundings.

“And who must you be, dragon and human at the same time?” A voice booms over my head. I immediately didn’t like him, whoever he is.
