Ah, the life of an influencer. Bobby B.’s cynical smile widened as he logged into his Instagram account, ready to entertain his 1.5 million followers with yet another “spooky” adventure. This time, he was in Ellie, Nebraska — not exactly a hotspot on any map. But thanks to a persistent fan, here he was deep in the middle of nowhere, hunting for content. He finished his coffee and let out a satisfied belch. Outside the window of his van, a sepia dusk settled over the skeletal forest that awaited him. “Hi y’all,” he greeted as the Live Feed blinked to life. “It’s your good buddy Bobby B. here in Ellie, Nebraska. You’ve heard the stories — the giant pumpkin that comes to life — so we’re here to debunk the mystery. Let’s go, guys!” There were only 5,000 viewers, but no worries, a little feigned terror was bound to have the numbers rising soon. He grabbed his selfie stick, phone attached, and started into the woods. The crunch of dead leaves beneath his boots sounded too loud. The beam of his flashlight darted between the trees as his audience — now 6,500 — filled the chat with hearts and laughing emojis. “Hold up, guys,” he whispered, lowering his voice for dramatic effect. “Looks like we’ve got company. I think there’s something behind me. Let’s go check it ou—” Thump. 9,355 viewers froze, staring at the flickering feed. The camera had fallen to the ground. All that could be seen were dead leaves, the scurry of a small mouse… and, just for a moment, something else — something round and orange, enormous, its jagged mouth gaping with crooked teeth. Then the screen went black. The next day, there were still no updates from Bobby B. But his followers? They’d jumped to 2.1 million.
