Miracle Baby
When I was young, my family lived in the countryside outside of Houston. It was beautiful. My brothers and I made some nice friends in the neighborhood.
When Easter time rolled around, we were all getting excited about the usual, going to church and the egg hunt. That year the weather was perfect.
My father was a doctor. He liked to get up before the family did because he wanted to get the newspaper to read the comics. His favorite was Beetle Bailey.
My bedroom was near the front door. This is important because if we had a visitor, the doorbell would wake me up. But that morning, I heard a lot of car horn honking. It sounded like someone was trying to get someone out of their way. And then I heard voices and the doorbell ring, ring, ring and “Open up please!”
My father got up and let the people in. I was awake and wanted to see what was going on.
The people were a mother and father with a child in their arms. The child was pale and limp. They immediately put the child on the couch and started babbling out a story of what had happened.
Their boys wanted to play a little baseball before church. The eldest child who was eleven, swung his bat which flew out of his hands.
The little girl, his sister, who was about 5 was not far from her brother was hit directly in the chest. She fell down. Everyone ran to her. They saw that she was not breathing. So the parents knew that my father, was a couple of minutes away and could help. Everyone jumped into the car and drove quickly down the street to our house.
In our living room, there was crying and talking as my father went to get his stethoscope. He checked her chest for a heartbeat. Nothing. He felt under her nose for breathing. Nothing.
As doctors do, he was going to tell the parents his findings, “I’m sorry but your daughter is d_____.”
But he did not get out the word ‘dead’ because the girl took a deep breath and breathed out the most wonderful sound anyone wanted to hear. She continued with more breaths and by that time our mother was at the phone to call for an ambulance.
There were hugs all around. The girl’s brother were hugging and crying with joy.
For a minute or two, this girl was dead. But now she was returning to her normal color, and crying. The parents were overjoyed with having their daughter back alive.
The ambulance took the girl to the nearest hospital and the ICU in which she was the only patient.
The local newspaper called her “The Easter Miracle Baby.” This was over 50 years ago but I remember the incident as if it was yesterday. No other miracle could be as happy as this one.
Now for the present day of 2025, the young girl has passed away as a middle age woman from a disease. Her baseball playing brother has passed away. And I am here to remember the most beautiful miracle God can give, a young girl coming back from the dead.
God was wonderful that day. (As he always is.)
