Evie felt underdressed for the restaurant. At the bar men wore suits and formal robes. The women had iridescent and sometimes glowing fabric draped over them. Their hair took up various forced shapes and colors. She was ready to take her tacky gold sequined spaghetti strap blouse and black silk palazzo pants right back out the door. That was when she spotted Brenda at the bar. Brenda wore a primatively woven blouse and khakis. Somehow Brenda still managed to look like she belonged there. Especially as she chuckled at some statement made by the man next to her. Brenda's hand rested casually on the stranger's wrist. Evie blinked. Was Brenda flirting with him? He chuckled at her response and tucked one of Brenda's many curly red stray hairs behind her ear. He was receptive. Evie's heart dropped to her stomach. Was Brenda interested in him? Evie eyed the well quaffed man and did not need to wonder why Brenda would be. He was everything Evie was not. She compared her limp brown hair and sight build to his darkly brooding chiseled face that promised a well defined six pack and arms not bulging with muscles but with clear muscular definition. And he easily matched Brenda's height A familiar fear clawed through Evie's gut. Brenda was too perfect to really want or need Evie. Evie began to turn to leave, stopped only by Brenda's voice, "Evie, you found the place." Brenda quickly and quietly extricated herself from the conversation at the bar and joined Evie near the hostess station. "So who's he?" Evie choked out. "I haven't the faintest... He just came up and started talking to me." "And flirting..." Evie mumbled she clutched her pendant and prayed that it really did obscure her thoughts to Brenda's telepathy. Brenda had made a gift of it on their one week anniversary. "I am really not used to having to judge emotions without my telepathy, but it seems like you're upset." Evie decided to lay her fears on the table, "You were flirting with him." "Me? No! I love you." "It's what it looked like. Especially to him," Evie said. "And to you. I'm sorry I am the one used to being the socially awkward one. I was really just being nice. I didn't mean to flirt. I don't really know how." "You were doing a good parody of it." Evie tried to laugh off her hurt. "Babe, you are my beautiful treasure. I feel lucky that you want me. I would never do anything to hurt you on purpose." Brenda wiped unnoticed tears from the corners of Evie's eyes." She looked around, "Why did I pick this place anyway? This place isn't us. How does Junkburger sound?" Evie nodded and leaned into the guiding arm Brenda put around her. The next instant they stood in line at the fast food restaurant's outdoor walk up counter. This was much more them. 615 words prompt ▼ |
