Yellow Submarine

Therese poured water into a kettle, setting it on the softly humming electric burner. She pulled out a tea bag. Her calico cat, Maven, slithered between her legs, purring.

Classical music played on an old-fashioned radio in the corner as Therese prepared her tea. She relaxed into an armchair, propping a vintage book open in her lap.

A static burst interrupted the music.

“We regret to announce nuclear annihilation is initiated. Everyone please take cover.”

As radio silence settled in, Therese wrapped her blanket tighter, snuggling Maven. She knew her yellow submarine was safe from harm, twenty thousand feet underwater.
