Revolution

She limped with a grimace; a hand clutching her aching ribs, while the other held onto the tattered remains of a placard that once read ‘Make Peace. Not War.’

Exhausted, she slumped to the curb and leaned against the lamp post.

She barely flinched at the pieces of glass that crunched beneath her; a grim reminder of the results from angry bullets launched during the skirmish.

The night air was thick with the smell of blood and smoke; fires from targeted buildings still blazing as fire fighters did their best to put them out.

The pigs – aka the police – loitered around with their rabid dogs eager to sink their canines into any other protester foolish enough to challenge them again.

Sheila sniffled and rubbed away a traitorous tear that slid down her cheek.

Her parents were, naturally, worried for her safety when she stated she would join the protest about the war in Vietnam.

I must take a stand, she had rebelled against them. I don’t want to sit around doing nothing. I want to be a part of the revolution!

It was a compromise they’d have to agree with considering they’d deterred her from joining the Black Panther Party.

She, along with about three hundred others, began their march around midday after listening to emboldening speeches from passionate activists. Unfortunately, their good intentions was met with violence and a blow to her lower back from a metal pipe she hadn’t seen coming.

Sheila sighed and struggled to her feet again; knowing she was lucky it hadn’t been worse.

She knew she was just one blow away from joining the immobile figures sprawled in their pool of blood.

         And yet-

I am never giving up, she vowed with a glare of determination. I’ll continue the fight until a change happens.
