Noise

“What was that?” she sat up sharply and asked.

“It sounds like the dog knocked over the trash can in the kitchen,” I said with a shrug. It had happened many times before.

She sighed and went into the kitchen. A few moments later, she returned, laughing.

“What is so darn funny?” I asked.

She had trouble stopping her laugh long enough to answer me. “The cat dumped the trash.”

“How do you know?”

She counted points off on her fingers. “For one, the dog is outside. For two, the cat is in the can, eating the leftover rotisserie chicken.”
