“Where's my coffee?”

His thin, piping voice had a slight wheeze to it. The nurse brought him a glass of warm water and his morning pills.

“You can't drink coffee anymore, remember? It's too acidic for you. Time for your meds, honey.”

“I don't take any meds. I want my coffee.”

“You need your morning meds. I can make you some tea.”

“Not tea, coffee! Who are you? Why are you here?”

He was getting agitated. She sighed and squeezed his shoulder soothingly.

“I'm your daughter. I'm here to help you.”

Being her father's nurse meant watching him fading away.
