What I Do in the Real World
Every day is a new education. My recent trip to deliver some office furniture I made for a client in Pennsylvania was no exception. Subject: U-Haul Trailers.
First, here's a picture of the solid Cherry desk delivered just over a 1000 miles from my shop in central Missouri. My co-worker, Christina, not only helps with some perspective, but she helped constuct, finish and assemble this monster.
The weather hereabouts had been squirrely at best. I figured a covered trailer would be the best solution against nasty weather. After all, I had four major pieces to deliver; it wouldn't do to have them arrive wet. We loaded the L-shaped Desk, a two-drawer Lateral Filing Cabinet, a 42-inch Round single Pedestal Table, and two Coffee Tables with granite inserts into a U-Haul trailer we thought would cost about $40 for the two-day trip. I paid more than $150 upfront anticipating to be reimbursed when I turned it back in. Not!!!
Apparently the $14.95 per day fee is only for rent and return trailers--when you go one way, they charge a flat rate based on the distance WITH NO REIMBURSEMENT. Sure would have been nice for one of the three folk I talked with to arrange for the trailer to tell that BEFORE I left.
But the trip out and back was uneventful, and the installation of all pieces went without a hitch. More importantly, my client was very happy. T'ain't nothing better than a satisfied customer.
