We’ve always had daylight saving in Australia, well certainly since I arrived in 1972, but before that I was brought up with it in the UK. Personally I’ve never been a fan. In the UK when I was a mother trying to get kids to sleep, whilst it was still daylight until 10.30 pm or even later, I disliked it.
During World War One it was a way to save energy resources such as coal, using fewer electric lights and less heating during the lighter evenings and being more productive. Weeks after Germany introduced DST, other countries adopted the idea, including the UK, where it was named British Summer Time (BST).
We live in Western Australia which means the sun sets here over the Indian Ocean, which in turn means we get the most sunlight. Eventually the West Australian people voted not to have DST here. Every so often someone brings up the idea again but the answer is a resounding NO.
Of course some of the reasons given are ridiculous, such as, ‘it’ll fade the curtains’ or ‘the cows will be confused,’ but really? Do we need more sunshine late into the evenings? I’m sure lots of people will say a resounding Yes, but after weeks of temperatures in the high thirties, most of us can’t wait for the sun to sink beautifully, serenely over the ocean.

Prompt: AI in human brain
If it were possible to insert an AI capacity in a human brain without messing up the human brain's natural abilities, would you approve it and would you have AI inserted in your own brain?

Why would anyone do such a thing? Just imagine someone, or a voice, telling you what to think all the time, or even making suggestions. You’d never know which were your own thoughts or the artificial intelligence’s.
When writing a story for a contest on WdC would someone with an AI inserted in their brain be on a level playing field?—You could look at that in two ways of course, depending on your view on AI!
What would happen to individuality?

Prompt: Have fun with these words: ghosts, spiders, pumpkins, scarecrows. children, moon, vegetation and confrontation.

I didn’t grow up with Halloween. Born in 1944 in England the war still hadn’t ended and the children old enough to remember bombs being dropped and all the confrontation which war brings wanted nothing more than peace, well their parents certainly did.
I do remember scarecrows though in the farmer’s field next to us. It stood there for years surrounded by vegetation and would occasionally sport a new jacket or hat. When we walked past the field in the dark and the moon was full we would see him still on guard from any pesky bird who might still be awake.

We definitely told ghost stories, my brothers who were older than me delighted in scaring me half to death.

One of my childhood delights was to sit on the steps leading down to our garden and put flies into spiderwebs and watch for the spider to come out of his crevice between the rocks. A bit of a gory sort of kid, obviously.

When my dad returned from the war after six years he recovered slowly and I think by growing a vegetable garden it helped him. He was a great gardener and when I was old enough I would love to help in the garden and he let me have my own pumpkin patch, but we never carved one.

Prompt: Horror Genre
Do you like the horror genre, and what was the first scary movie you saw or the scary book you read if you remember it?

I love writing horror stories but can't watch horror movies! I go back a long way and like all teenagers I liked being scared out of my wits, but safely, with a strong pair of arms to shield me.*Laugh*
Vincent Price movies were popular in my day. The Pit and the Pendulum, The Hand and others of the same ilk. Later came Psycho, The Birds and anything directed by Alfred Hitchcock. But the slasher movies of today such as the Chainsaw Massacre and Saw, well, there's no way I could even begin to view those.
I don't mind psychological horror movies such as, Seven with Brad Pitt.

On October 24, 1901, a 63-year-old schoolteacher named Annie Edson Taylor becomes the first person to successfully take the plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel.

Prompt: If you were offered a chance to take the plunge over the Niagara, would you?

Haha, I doubt anyone asked that question would reply in the affirmative. Not unless they were masochists. If I absolutely needed to state why not, I’d probably say:
1 I’m claustrophobic
2 I’m too big to fit in a wine barrel and a beer barrel would smell of hops of which I can’t stand the smell.
3 I’m scared of white water
4 I don’t want to die yet
5 I’m not crazy

Day 3981 October 23rd, 2025
Prompt: Let this quote about motivation inspire your entry today-- "Either you run the day or the day runs you," by Jim Rohn.

Oh wow I’ve never heard this quote before but it’s certainly true. Has anyone noticed the more time you have in a day with no plan, very little is achieved?
If I have a list of things to do I usually clear it by the end of the day. On the other hand if I can choose what I could/should do I procrastinate, take my time, have another cup of tea/coffee or waste time browsing on my phone. And then guess what? The day has run me instead of me running the day.

Prompt:
What if a massive storm wipes out technology, thrusting society into a new dark age without electricity and internet? What would happen to you, then? Could you survive it?

It would be very difficult, that’s for sure. We often have power outages where we live and so we have invested in a generator. Now that’s great so long as we have petrol to run it but at the pump you need electricity to get the fuel. For heating we have a wood burning stove so could cook soup or stew on the top. As for banking or anything to do with the internet? Well, we’d all be pretty well in a world of pain, wouldn’t we? Cash would become King again, bartering would definitely become imperative. But honestly we’re too far down the road of being dependent on the internet and technology to even think of managing without it.
The world would be in absolute chaos.

Prompt: Write a ghost story including any characters of your choice, with one twist: the story takes place in a past decade or century. Have fun!

I have a great ghost story. It even made me chuckle and I wrote it! You could imagine it to be in a past decade except it’s not! It’s certainly in the 21st century.
Anyway check it out if you’ve the time.

Most misunderstandings in the world could be avoided if people would simply take the time to ask, "What else could this mean?” ― Shannon L. Alder

Do you agree or disagree?

I don’t really agree with asking that particular question but I do agree to taking the time to ask more when someone is stating a view dissimilar to mine, “that’s really interesting, tell me more.” People are often just repeating a point of view they’ve heard or has been drilled into them and haven’t really given it much thought.

My friend, a Buddhist, loves to challenge people when they say something like:”I don’t like…” whatever it might be, perhaps a place, a person, or an even a country. She won’t let them get away with just saying they don’t like something she’ll ask them, “that’s interesting you say that, can you tell me why that is ?’
It makes people think before speaking. We need to be able to defend our point of view.

Wake Up Little Susie," reached the top spot on October 14, 1957, though not without stirring controversy in some parts due to lyrics that hinted at teenage sex. Literally banned in Boston at one point, the Everly's' first chart-topper was taken at face value in most parts of the country as an insanely catchy song about two teenagers who have innocently fallen asleep at a movie only to awaken at 4:00 AM in fear of having ruined their good reputations."

What was the worst thing you ever did as a teenager?

I’m trying to remember and then realised it’s probably best to forget.
Well of course I was a teenager in the early sixties and the morals of the time were very different to what they are now. My boyfriend and I were allowed to go on holiday together on the proviso we had separate rooms at the boarding house my parents had booked for us. We borrowed my dad’s car along with so many rules about speeding etc.
On that holiday we got very drunk, drove my dad’s car down a flight of steps and slept together. We were like released prisoners going wild. Knowing all that and getting away with it, I dread to think what my own kids got up to.
