Ten years ago I was writing several blogs on various subjects - F1 motor racing, Music, Classic Cars, Great Romances and, most crushingly, a personal journal that included my thoughts on America, memories of England and Africa, opinion, humour, writing and anything else that occurred. It all became too much (I was attempting to update the journal every day) and I collapsed, exhausted and thoroughly disillusioned in the end.
So this blog is indeed a Toe in the Water, a place to document my thoughts in and on WdC but with a determination not to get sucked into the blog whirlpool ever again. Here's hoping.
I've met a confused Englishman who was on the wrong floor where I live. Immediately knew what the issue was. We're half airbnb... It doesn't help that the rooms are numbered 1-60 on the second and third floor. Then there's the 42 stairs.
We have a café here that was an old drug store. The molded tin ceilings are wonderful. The high shelves complete with a moveable ladder are another marvel.
I just like my floors to support me without obvious spongey, soft spots. Now, if they could magically and quickly morph into a cushioning substance when I fall...

The basement could be the underground floor.
The problem with starting your count after that ground floor comes when you have a hotel or other building with more than 13 floors because often they skip the 13th floor when numbering levels due to the superstitions of those who might object to staying, living or working on the 13th floor. You really have to skip two floors to skip the actual 13th level AND the floor that is the 13th one from the ground floor. It's too confusing.
Tomorrow is the big day when I go in for the next part of the procedure (they don't call it an operation) begun two weeks ago. As a consequence, I may not be around in the morning. Such is life and the open endedness of things.
In the meantime, reflect on this: two weeks in the USA is a fortnight in Britain. And the fortnight refers to the fact that it's fourteen nights. Sorta medieval contraction.
