Musicology Anthology (13+) An annual challenge to write a short story collection based on an album! Runs April-June. #1377819 by Jeff
While I knew of Gerry Rafferty back in the 70s and 80s, it was just through his big hits, e.g. "Baker Street" and "Night Owl". I only started listening to his wider catalogue about 10 years or so ago. He was uncomfortable with fame and the music industry and it shows again and again in his work, both solo and as part of Stealers Wheel.
This is probably his strongest album - the first he'd been able to release in several years due to legal constraints relating to the breakup of Stealers Wheel. So many songs are about travelling, being separated from family and the strains it places on relationships, escaping away from the rat race and finally being able to return home. Apparently much of it was written as he travelled over and over from Scotland to London to deal with all the legal hassles surrounding the Stealers Wheel saga, so at least this interruption to his career gave him the raw material to return with a bang when he started recording again.
