This Round:
Chief Mate on Duty
The Chief Mate is in charge of cargo and the deck crew. This person makes sure that items get from one place to another and are stowed properly along the way. "Stowed
properly" can mean something different when you're trying to make a good story out of the journey.
---- Instructions and Guidelines ----
Opens: May 1
Deadline: May 31

Choose a character and a piece of cargo. You must use one of each from the
Cargo and Deck Crew lists below. Write a short story.

Your story needs to be
between 1,500 and 5,500 words. Not required, but it would be great to have your word count in
the body of your post when you link your entry.

All fiction genres are welcome.

There are no content rating restrictions.

Proofread, edit, and revise.

One story per contestant.

Linking ▼ To find out how to make any link, go to the left-hand column of any WdC page and click “Writing.com Tools.” In the menu that pops up, choose, “WritingML: Docs and Help.” “Link to Item” is under the heading of Create Links. Click it.
Judging notes: 1.) If the characters are engaging, the story has a great chance of being engaging. 2.) No matter how engaging the characters, beautiful the story, or genius the incorporation of the contest's requirements, none of it will come through with poor grammar and mechanics. A few typos aren't going to hurt your chances, but general sloppiness will.
---- Cargo and Deck Crew ----
One choice from each of these lists should be in your story.
Cargo ▼
Egg
That's right; you've been tricked. It's not a list. There's only one choice of cargo item. But it can be plural; there can be many eggs. The egg or eggs can be of any kind, from something that can be fertilized to gestate into a living thing to a decorative recreation. So long as it is in any way both a physical item and recognizable in any way as an egg, you're good.
Here's the catch, though: this egg (or eggs) must be something that is intended to be delivered from one place to another. (i.e. It should make sense to refer to the egg/s as "cargo" at some point in the story, even if by a loose definition.) Whether or not this cargo ever gets delivered (or even starts its journey) is up to you.
Deck Crew ▼
The character you choose from this list can have any role in the story, from main character to only a mention. The character needs to be easy for your judge to identify, though.

A bad liar who is likeable.

Someone who has a legitimate reason to fear rain, and is forced to confront it.

A paranormal expert who believes one of the other characters is a paranormal or supernatural creature.
