I never write fan-fiction unless it is for a contest prompt. I don’t usually enjoy reading it, though I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with it. I think, as long as you give proper credit to the authors/creators of the characters, then it should be perceived as a compliment that the person chose to use those characters and expand their story.
That being said, I’m usually not a fan, and I do think if anyone should try to publish a fan-fiction, obviously approval from the owners of the characters should be necessary.
