Have you ever read James Thurber's The Catbird Seat? The protagonist of that is described, among other things, as meek, temperate, drab, and ordinary. He's a filing clerk in the office where he works who desires nothing more than everything to remain exactly as they have been. Thurber is known for writing about the common working man in ordinary situations.
