In literature archaic often means that the style is no longer comfortable for modern readers and that they find it distracting, boring, or difficult to follow or relate to. Archaic doesn't necessarily sell and if you want to be a successful, commercial writer (in other words have readers) that is what is wrong with it, unless you can somehow make it modern.
For an example of archaic writing that is still studied, try reading The Awakening or Sister Carrie. Both are excellent, thought-provoking stories, but the writing is difficult to wade through because of its style.
