Reading aloud will show up so many horrid errors! I try to do that only with people I know are pros. I'm not sure who it hurts worse, the reader or the writer.
That's a tip I'd like to pass on: Have someone else, who loves you, read your work aloud to you. You'll hear every mispunctuation, awkward construction, tongue-twisting word choice, all of it. It hurts, but it needs to be done.
