Victoria and Albert might be responsible for introducing the christmas tree to England, so I'll defer to you on the rest of the English-speaking world, but I've been given to understand it came to the US directly, via the large number of German immigrants to this country during the early 19th century. There's more than one Pennsylvania town that claims to have started the tradition in the US.
I imagine there's no way to prove their claims of course. But we do have evidence that suggests the tree hadn't reached New York yet by 1823. That's when and where "'Twas The Night Before Christmas" first appeared. You can search it front to back and find nary a pine needle.
