Dark is... more of a mood than a theme. As I understand it, themes that would fit in a dark story include death, addiction, despair, loss, obsession... the list goes on, and there are many "happy" themes that can (and should) be twisted into darkness.

To paraphrase lines from Doctor Who, "sad" is "happy" for deep people.
