This message is for anyone who's having difficulty with deciding what character is the antagonist in their story (or if you even want one at all). After talking with my mom this morning, I had a revelation -- the antagonist doesn't necessarily HAVE to be bad; the good ones exist behind their motives.
Instead, think of the antagonist as something/someone that is everything your protagonist isn't. He/she is the ultimate warning sign to the protagonist, a grotesque representation of what the protagonist will become if he stays on the course that he's taking now.
