I can definitely see why it would be scary. I guess when I say that I tell people I love them quickly, it's definitely not in an intense way. Like, I'm not declaring that I'm in love with them. More just like, "Aww, love you, bro!"
It makes sense that your best friend/ex said it so quickly because he probably loved you during the friendship. I'm sure it felt natural to say it once you were officially together.
