Good points. It's probably more about adding pets to help describe a character. After all, a lot of BoM is character development, two-sides when Will gets into a mask and sees that person's perspective as well. Their personality may be different to certain pets than what Will's might be.
How animals affect someone and the person reacts to them can add some insight into the character. It could also grow/change Will should he be exposed under a mask to animals that he doesn't like but that person does.
It's not like pets are that important to the story. Maybe they interact between scenes/chapters and we just don't see them.
