Well, my very first way to earn my own money was to pick the pears and peaches from our fruit trees and sell them. I put up a sign near the driveway stating what I had for sale and how much I wanted per bushel and people would stop by and buy the fruit. It was hot, sticky, sometimes risky business (think yellow jacket wasps on the rotting fruit) but it paid for many trips to the pool and skating rink for a number of years.
After that, I mowed people's yards - with a push mower, of course. My parents weren't dumb enough to let a teenaged girl have access to a riding mower, especially not one who had already totaled a couple of motorcycles.
My official first job at an actual business was as a cook/cashier/drive-thru person at Whataburger when I was 16.
