I think the disapproval of my parents was pretty scary for me. They were strict in some ways and totally detached in others. It was tricky knowing what to expect of them. Responsibility was frightening for me, too. Early on, I was expected to "keep an eye on" my younger sister and brother. I was only 3 years older and deeply felt the burden of being responsible for their safety. Heavy stuff for a little kid.
