This is one of the main reasons I have always avoided Student Bodies. Its rules are all over the shop! Personally, I had a notion that the goo itself is somewhat sentient, and that the powers that change are because it is trying to adapt, through David, to survive. Hence the ability to concentrate and change people at a cellular level. Much of this isn't David, but the parasitic nature of what he has become.
