What amount of backstory do you have? Could you work some of that into your piece? I think any husband would be interested in solving a problem with a wife first, but if the murdered man is somehow connected to the wife, then that would tie everyone together. Or is that what your issue is...

What story did the wife have apart from the husband and vice versa? Would that help tie some ends?
