When I started on this writing journey, I sent a series of short stories to a horror magazine.
The editor rejected them all, but was incredibly kind because he took the time to critique them. Basically, all but one were Stephen King pastiches, and the one that wasn't... was a HP Lovecraft pastiche!
The novel I wrote and submitted for English when I was 17 was deemed by friends to have possiblky too much of Hughes about it, especially in the interactions of the chracters.
I know that a lot of my early fantasy was derivative of Robert E Howard and H Rider Haggard as well.
That was in the 1980s... and it took me until the end of the 1990s to really get iunto the swing with what approached my own style. Those old authors are still there, of course, I just like to think I have a bit of my own style to go along with them.
