All the evidence we have so far points to the fact that there is no life in the rest of the universe, intelligent or otherwise. Since science must be based upon evidence, for the moment we should assume that there is no life. In point of fact, however, it doesn't really matter one way or the other. The distances involved are so great that there is no possibility of intelligent aliens ever reaching us from wherever they live and, equally, we'll never get to their turf either. For all practical purposes (except for the writing of scifi novels), we can assume (and actually do in reality) that this little blue planet is the only one on which life exists. |
