Other than the experience of providing for deeper, more significant missions to places where humans could live and prosper, I see zero purpose for going to Mars; humans can't live there long-term. We would be better served to build Space-based platforms with artificial gravity systems. This would allow us to learn, evolve, and develop realistic exploration abilities.
