There have been many of those over the years. Springsteen, obviously, with Born to Run. Adam Duritz of Counting Crows; the first time I heard "'Round Here" on the radio, I knew. Dar Williams with "The Christians and the Pagans" (okay, that one's probably too obscure for most people). Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne," of course, though that hardly counts because I knew his poetry before his song. And many, many more.
But if I had to pick just one to go with, and probably the most recent (though still 20 years ago), it would be Brandi Carlile with "The Story." Not to get all hipster or anything, but I was listening to her music before it was cool.
