My mom had 4o'clocks in her garden. They didn't get the memo about afternoons...they'd bloom at 4 in the morning while it was still dark. She thought they were do-dah. It probably had to do with the fact that street lights make the plant "confused". There was a sodium lamp that shone all night and we were growing the 4o'clocks under a shade tree. 4am was probably interpreted as mid afternoon to their "bioclocks".
