I get along pretty well fine with the six basic arithmetics since decades: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and – very important for not only Germans! – per mille.
That being forced by the curriculum to read so-called "Classics" can mess up your relationship with reading them – and in the worst case, reading in general.
I re-read several, like Paul Auster's Moon Palace, again when I "had the choice"... some – like the mentioned – moved from poop-y to pretty nice/great.
