There were so many things. I walked everywhere in the town by myself all through elementary school. I took myself to the local library, I walked home from school (I walked with a group of neighbor kids in the morning), walked to friends' houses, etc. I remember the "stranger danger" lectures we got at school, but they were completely meaningless to me. One exception was they gave an example of a stranger offering a ride saying that they were a friend or acquaintance of your parents and what to do if that happened. Right after we heard that lecture, my maternal Grandparents were due to visit. I hadn't seen them since I was very young and didn't remember what they looked like. I was very worried they would try to pick me up from school (which they would not have done, of course) and how I would handle it. The things kids worry about. My paternal Grandfather was known to be a crazy driver. He liked to drive fast and pass cars when he shouldn't, etc. The other thing he liked to do was beat on the kids in the back seat as he was driving like a maniac. Also, I remember my husband was telling me that one day he was riding the Harley and following a mini van up I-25. The van was driving erratically. He assumed that the driver was texting or talking on a cell. He got a chance to pass, and he could see a woman reaching in the back seat with a yard stick to hit some kids strapped in back there. At least my father and his siblings weren't strapped into the back seat, maybe they were able to dodge some of the blows...? |
