I recently watched The Proposal and it suddenly dawned on me that this was a rewrite of While You Were Sleeping without the comatose fiance. Sandra Bullock's character was a lonely orphan in both movies, she pretended to be engaged in both movies and through this deception developed close relationships with her fiance's family in both movies - even the elderly grandmother who was played by Betty White in this movie and the inimitable Glynis Johns in WYWS. Both grandmas had weak hearts and Sandra was worried in each movie that knowing the truth about the sham engagement world bring on heart attack. It's not Sandra's fault that she seemed less vulnerable and winsome at 45 than she did at 31. Betty White was the only one allowed to allude to the character's age. But we noticed. It was still a mildly fun romcom but it was pushing us to the very limit of our ability to suspend our disbelief. Hollywood doesn't seem to have any new ideas these days but they may have to find some new and younger stars if they keep using the same plots. |
