I haven't read 'The Outsider' but it's one of his more recent ones and I've heard they're all pretty meh, although people have said the last one is back to the old King.
If you want to start somewhere, go way back. Pet Sematary is a good one, and The Stand (the shorter version) is brilliant. I have just finished 'Salem's Lot for the October theme and I loved it.
The number of pages isn't really an issue. This is where the 'bad' writing is an advantage because it's easy to read and you don't have to think too much. It helps if you lie on a beach and can just read for hours, or can't sleep on a long flight
