As someone who wrote fanfiction in her younger years once upon a time, I generally agree with Beholden . I honestly feel that writing fanfiction is an expression of love for the story. I also think writing fanfiction is good practice for writers, particularly young writers, who may not feel confident building their own world(s) yet. Having a pre-built framework to work with can help build a writer's confidence to branch out into original stuff.
