In 2013, I wrote a bit of amateurish-tripe for a fan site for a computer game. After 16 episodes in a fanfiction series, I got an email from Charles Leavitt. He asked if I would be interested in participating in a project to create the storyboard narratives for his screenplay. I said yes and spent the next eight weeks playing with a dozen other fanfiction writers, working on his project. He sold it to Blizzard Entertainment, and in 2016, it opened as the movie Warcraft. So, yes, there can be a place for fanfiction... Unless you seek to sell or otherwise profit from it. Writing fanfiction is not a violation of anything but common sense. My fellow writers and I didn't even get a nod in the fine print credits… But I got to meet and almost impress Christine Golden https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christie_Golden. She liked my storytelling and character development and offered to story-edit my efforts if I turned my musings into a book. I have completed four of the planned seven book-High-Fantasy, but the books have been written over 11 years. Over that time, my understanding of our craft has grown exponentially. I sit some nights wondering how to edit and repair these files of fertilizer. The result is the realization that it would be better to hit the delete key and start anew… but then there is the problem of my not wanting to be a fantasy writer. I am much more set on trying out my chances for an Edgar over a Hugo… |
