While the south end of Bartow is mostly retired folk, our neighborhood is still more affluent than the north side of State Highway 60. We live across the lane from the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church's 30-acre campus in Bartow. The church allows folks to use their parking lots, and folks come from all over to unload their golf carts or meet up to form a utility trailer parade of Trick-or-Treating children… Last year, we gave out eight pounds of candy in under an hour and a half. This year, I bought fifteen pounds. We have not dressed up since moving to Bartow but used to do so at our old residence in Lithia, Florida. My dear, sweet, late mother started this tradition back in 1972. At the old house, we hosted parties with bonfires, hayrides, and games. And yes, we would dress up. My mother, who was almost as saintly as my grandmother, made an excellent Wicked Witch of the West. I have been dozens of characters, from Knight to the devil himself. But nowadays, the only character close to my physique would be Jabba the Hut! |
