I think outright taking credit for someone else 's idea is wrong. But I think if you were inspired by someone's work and made something off it they may be flattered. There was a kid from my middle school that published a book about Indianna Jones. He didn't make that character but maybe he got permission for his book to do so. As long as you're being respectful to the original content/creator and give credit where it's due, I think you should be fine.
