Macbeth, which is strange as that is the one we had to analyse to death in English class, an experience usually guaranteed to kill off the remotest enthusiasm. The Polanski film is great fun. Our class were taken to a local arts centre to see it. It got a great unintentional laugh when a naked Lady Macbeth is starting with her mental breakdown—the doctor has the line "What a sigh is there!" but, to a class of smutty 16-year-olds, it sounded as if he'd said "What a size they are!"
This may get me labelled a philistine, but I watched a movie of Hamlet a couple of years ago and found it absurd. When the bodies started dropping like flies in the last act, I was absolutely howling. I'm sure it's really meant to be a comedy.
