Prison is supposed to be the punishment. I think a lot depends on the prisoner and the crime committed. Some prisons should (and do, I believe) house non-violent criminals with shorter sentences, etc. who would benefit from any vocational resources and help in re-entering society. But there are facilities that have a more violent population and there is a reason that those prisoners are isolated from society. Even in that circumstance, there may be individuals who can rise above their mistakes and pursue a better future for themselves. The opportunity for rehabilitation should always be available for those who will take it. Unfortunately, many have had their perspectives hardened, knowing no other lifestyle, and will continue to return to prison. We should offer help and hope, but realize that we can't change anyone who doesn't want to change.
