I think it's good for kids to read things that grab their interest but are also written well, contain vocabulary-expanding text as well as a main character who shows admirable traits and can be a role model. Who wouldn't have wanted to be Nancy Drew exploring mysteries with her chums? I read all those and then all my brother's Hardy Boys books. Moved onto Agatha Christie. They never made crime look like a good choice and kept it all pretty bloodless.
