Admittedly, learning crime solving is a how-to manual for committing crime, but they can learn the basics of that on the street. Which is one of the reasons the highest mortality rate among the humans is during the neuro-adaptative psychopathic phase called "teenager".
Reading: Building skeptisim. Accumulating intelligence, creativity. Learning to think. Learning how to learn without knowing it. Generally, who cares what the subject is, as long as they enjoy it. (If they're not enjoying themself, they stop learning.)
And they need a senior figure familiar with the subject to answer questions, as "children" (and I'm including many adults) don't know how to differentiate valid internet sites from misinformation sites. They need guidance. Not a iron hand. Just guidance.
And they don't need an ignorant old maid (gender non-specific) dictating what they should read, what they should think.
