I read the question and had a rant all ready to go... But moderation stepped in... See, there has been some fascinating psychology about "triggers" and 'trigger warnings" come out in the past 5-10 years. A "trigger warning" actually sets a person up to be triggered by something they might otherwise not have been. And being "triggered", while a valid response, is not an excuse for poor behaviour. In fact, the psychology seems to indicate that a sizeable proportion of those who do claim to have "triggers" actively seek out things that "trigger" them. Why? There have been a number of reasons put forward, but it all comes down to one thing: "Look at me!" But, realistically, if we stopped everything that triggers anybody, there would be no media at all. I suffer from PTSD. Diagnosed and everything; not me self-diagnosing and claiming it. An event or something that "triggers" me tells me t am in a negative headspace and am letting the past overtake the present. While I have found that meditation does not work for me, and I cannot meditate, I do have some strategies for dealing with this, and they have so far worked. None of them involve lashing out at others, especially creators. Or attacking the defenceless, especially animals (one guy in the area with PTSD attacks seagulls, and is currently awaiting trial for animal cruelty, and his PTSD/trigger excuse looks like failing dismally). Yes, people are "triggered", and they do have "triggers." Then maybe, just maybe, it is the individual's responsibility to remove themselves from that situation, not demand everyone else miss out. There is no excuse to lash out, to take your own personal foibles and inflict them upon everyone else because you might be "triggered." That is pushing this into the realms of narcissism... more "Look at me! Pay attention to ME!" behaviour. And, no, I will not include trigger warnings on my work. And you should have seen the rant I originally wrote on this! Sorry... |
