I agree with the references to the scientific method. One can't simply absorb what one reads or hears as truth. True media literacy requires active participation ... fact-checking, pattern awareness, independent critical thinking/analysis, hypothesis generation, testing, and concluding. It also requires a willingness to repeat the process if presented with new information that challenges one's original conclusion(s). This takes time and dedication that many don't have. Unfortunately, it gives power to those skilled at manipulating and persuading others into blindly agreeing with their biased perspectives and agendas.
